What is Open Water Swimming?
Unlike pool swimming, open water swimming takes place in natural environments like lakes, rivers, or the sea. It introduces elements of variability, such as temperature fluctuations, currents, and varying visibility. At The Lake, swimmers can enjoy a controlled yet authentic open water experience. The designated swimming area allows individuals of all abilities to enjoy a two-hour session for just £6. This offers an affordable way to access the unique benefits of open water swimming. The environment at The Lake is also supervised, adding another layer of safety.
Techniques for Open Water Success
Adapting your swimming technique is crucial for open water success. While basic strokes like freestyle and breaststroke are applicable, there are specific considerations:
- Sighting: Regularly lifting your head to check your direction is vital. Practice sighting every few strokes to avoid veering off course.
- Breathing: Adapt your breathing pattern to accommodate waves and choppy water. Bilateral breathing can help you stay balanced.
- Navigation: Use landmarks and buoys to stay on track. At The Lake, designated swim areas and clear water help with navigation.
- Temperature Management: Be prepared for cooler water temperatures – wetsuits are a must during the colder months. At The Lake, if you do not have a full wetsuit, a tow float is mandatory and can be rented for £2.50.
- Safety: Always prioritise safety. At The Lake, swimmers must be 16 years or older. Be aware of other water users, especially divers, who have the right of way. Use the provided pontoon and steps for safe entry and exit.
