Open Water Swimming FAQs

What are the benefits of open water swimming?

Open water swimming offers a refreshing change from the pool, allowing you to connect with nature while enjoying a full-body workout. It builds strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness, while cold water swimming can boost your immune system and improve circulation.

Is open water swimming safe?

Absolutely, as long as you take proper precautions. At The Lake, we provide a safe and supervised environment. All sessions are lifeguarded though we recommend swimming with a buddy or in a group, especially for beginners. Wearing a brightly coloured swim cap and using a tow float can also enhance your visibility in the water.

What is the difference between open water swimming and pool swimming?

While pool swimming offers a controlled environment, open water swimming provides a more dynamic and challenging experience. You'll need to adapt to varying water temperatures and be more aware of your surroundings. It's a great way to build confidence and experience a sense of freedom you won't find in a pool.

What should I wear for open water swimming?

Swimmers must either wear a full length wetsuit or use a tow float.

Wetsuits are recommended, especially in colder months, to keep you warm and improve buoyancy. Don't forget a brightly coloured swim cap for increased visibility and safety.

Do I need to be a strong swimmer to swim at The Lake?

We cater to all abilities, from beginners to experienced open water swimmers. Our designated swimming loops offer different distances to suit your confidence level. If you're new to open water swimming, we recommend starting with a shorter distance and gradually increasing your range.

*Please note swimmers must be at least 16 years of age and must either wear a full length wetsuit or use a tow float
