Scuba Diving Safety At The Lake

The Lake is a premier destination for scuba divers of all levels. We pride ourselves on providing an experience that is second to none. Our goal is to offer a safe, welcoming, and enjoyable environment where you can dive with confidence and ease.

At The Lake, we believe that diving should be free from unnecessary stress and worry. That’s why we’ve created a space where you can focus on the thrill of the dive, knowing that safety and enjoyment are our top priorities.

To ensure that everyone has a positive and safe experience, we’ve established a set of guidelines that we ask all divers to follow. These guidelines cover a range of important aspects, from buddy systems and responsible diving practices to equipment recommendations and respect for the underwater environment.

By familiarising yourself with these guidelines, you’ll contribute to a culture of safety and respect at The Lake, allowing everyone to fully appreciate the unique and captivating underwater world we offer.

Diving Safety Guidelines

  1. Diving with a Buddy: Solo diving is strictly prohibited at The Lake. You must dive with a buddy at all times, even if you are qualified for solo diving.
  2. Supervised Diving for Minors: Divers under 18 years old must be accompanied and directly supervised by an adult. They must also meet the minimum age requirements set by their diver training agency.
  3. Adherence to Training and Qualifications: Never attempt dives beyond your training level or ability. If you wish to advance your skills, do so only under the guidance and supervision of a qualified and insured diving instructor.
  4. Restricted Entry and Exit Points: Use only the designated entry and exit points provided at The Lake. Entering or exiting the water at any other location is prohibited.
  5. Pre-Dive Safety Checks: Before entering the water, always check the entry area for hazards. Be particularly cautious of submerged objects like rocks, which may be shallower than they appear.
  6. Equipment Recommendations for Cold Water: The Lake can be cold, even in the summer months. Always use appropriate thermal protection, including a neoprene hood and gloves. Regulators specifically designed for cold water use are recommended, especially during winter.
  7. Overhead Environment Precautions: Do not enter overhead environments unless you have the proper training. These areas can become hazardous due to rapid siltation.
  8. Ascent Procedures: Ascend by following the side of the quarry to the surface. If you must ascend mid-water, be aware of swimmers and paddleboarders on the surface and watch out for other divers above and below you.
  9. Maintaining Visibility and Avoiding Silt Disturbance: Certain areas of the lake are prone to siltation. Avoid contact with the lake bottom, especially with your fins, to prevent reducing visibility. Be mindful of the water movement your fins create.
  10. Safe Use of Buoy Lines: Many attractions are marked with tethered buoys. If using these lines for ascent or descent, be aware of other divers who may be using the same line.
  11. No Removal of Objects: Do not remove any objects from The Lake or its surrounding areas.
  12. Adherence to Diving Agency Policies: Always follow your diver training agency’s guidelines for safe diving practices.
  13. Diving Within Designated Hours: Diving is only permitted within the site’s opening hours. Any diving outside these hours requires prior arrangement with South West Maritime Academy.

Emergency Procedures at The Lake

Signalling for Help

  • From the shore: Use the emergency bells located at the dive platform or sound your car horn to alert staff.
  • On the surface: If you need assistance while on the water, lie on your back, wave one arm in the air, and shout for help.
  • Using buoy whistles: Each yellow buoy is equipped with a whistle to signal staff if you require assistance.

Buddy Separation

If you become separated from your buddy, conduct a one-minute search. If you are unable to locate them, surface immediately and inform the water safety team.

Emergency Marker Buoys

Yellow Surface Marker Buoys (SMBs) should only be used in emergencies. Deployment of an SMB will prompt an immediate response from the water safety team.

Underwater Alarm

If you hear the underwater emergency alarm, surface immediately and follow the instructions given by the water safety team.

Rescue Training

If you are conducting a rescue course as part of a school or training program, please notify a staff member before starting your dive.
