This two-hour expert workshop, held exclusively at The Lake, is designed to give you the essential knowledge, practical tips, and confidence you need to enjoy your swims or dips as the water gets chillier.

Get ready to swim through the colder months safely. This workshop is packed with information to help you assess conditions, understand your own ability, and stay safe as temperatures drop.

Meet Your Expert Coach: Helen Webster

This invaluable classroom-based session is run by renowned open-water swim coach and sports journalist, Helen Webster. Helen brings a wealth of personal and professional experience to the table, offering practical, real-world advice to help you embrace the cold. The workshop is designed to be interactive, with plenty of time for discussion and to answer all your questions.

What You Will Learn

Over the two hours, this comprehensive workshop will cover:

  • The proven benefits of swimming in cold water.
  • How to assess water and weather conditions before you even get in.
  • What kit to wear (and what to avoid) for both wetsuit and non-wetsuit swimmers.
  • How your body responds to cooler water and what to expect.
  • How to safely enter the water and avoid cold water shock.
  • Acclimatisation strategies and understanding how long is too long.
  • How to check in with yourself as you swim.
  • The key signs of hypothermia: recognising when a swimmer is too cold.
  • The “after-drop” and how to warm up safely (and effectively) after your swim.

Directions: Exit M5 at Junction 14 and head south-east on B4509 towards Wickwar. After approximately two miles at the roundabout, take the 3rd exit onto B4058 towards Cromhall. In 3/4 mile Cromhall Quarry will be on your right - note signs for South West Maritime Academy. Follow the road through the site and down into the quarry. Parking for The Lake is in front of the marquee.
